Policy and guidance

2 of 25 Principle 2

Principle 2:

Achieve good growth by capitalising on untapped opportunities and repurposing existing fabric to enable the sustainable and resilient development of the district.

Example actions:

Consider how the substantial social, economic and environmental benefits necessary to increase wellbeing can be delivered when assessing developments affecting heritage assets. Identify opportunities to increase development density and intensity of use, including through development of larger buildings where appropriate.

Adapt older buildings to allow them to accommodate new uses and ensure that all future developments are flexible.

Promote and support development that makes a clear contribution to the district’s growth and productivity and that accommodates land use efficiently to meet future needs (in terms of footfall, jobs numbers etc.) rather than current capacities.
