Design, use and management

21 of 25 Principle 21

Principle 21:

Explore opportunities for intensive use of floorspace to increase employment density, including through ‘nesting’ of cultural and leisure uses.

Example actions:

Encourage secondary and ‘nested’ uses, such as cafés and exhibition spaces, within existing retail units.

Fully utilise basements and rooftops, ensuring both spatial intensification of use and also different uses around the clock.

Seize opportunities to incorporate new uses on upper floors where retail is not appropriate, by diversifying use to allow for small, flexible workspaces, and educational and cultural uses, thus increasing activity around the clock in the district.

Support local businesses and small firms, which together create large numbers of local jobs, and encourage growth in sectors such as the creative industries to add to the character of the district.
