Design, use and management

23 of 25 Principle 23

Principle 23:

Consider how to optimise the design and animation of the ground plane in order to create dialogue between indoor and outdoor spaces and contribute to the civic identity of the district.

Example actions:

Utilise side streets as public space to accommodate civic amenity and extend activity inside and outside of units on the ground floor.

Create a hierarchy of entrances along the street frontage giving prominence to public, retail and commercial entrances, and differentiating them from private fire doors and service entrances. Design lobby or transition spaces inside retail units where visitors can orientate themselves, and that have the flexibility to be used for activities, such as exhibitions that attract footfall and add to the dynamic nature of the street.
